INSTRUCTION
PARENTS
Are you giving your kids a puppy
as a present?
Why not include an obedience class!
We encourage family participation when training a puppy. Kids 8 and older can
help train! Younger children may not have the attention, comprehension skills,
or hand/eye coordination to do the actual training. It depends on the individual
child and puppy.

well-mannered member of your family. I will teach you to train your adult dog
how to sit, down, stand, stay, come.

Pet Manners II
This class is a continuation of what is taught
in Pet Manners. More complex heeling with a figure 8, more formal recalls, learn
to "finish", longer stays and I add Rally Obedience exercises and Canine Good
Citizenship testing
exercises. Students graduating from this class can repeat or go into competition
classes.
Canine Good Citizen (CGC)

This class will help prepare you and your
dog to earn a Canine Good Citizenship (CGC) certificate offered by the American
Kennel Club. The test consists of 10 exercises including accepting a friendly
stranger, sitting politely for petting, walking on a loose leash, walking
through a crowd, grooming, sit and down on command, reaction to another dog,
coming when called, reaction to distraction and supervised separation.
New message from AKC: "The Canine Good Citizen® program is
a noncompetitive activity that promotes responsible dog ownership. The number of
Canine Good Citizens continued to increase, with more than 25,000 dogs taking
the 10-step CGC test in 2003. The program promotes awareness of responsible dog
ownership as an alternative to breed-specific legislation.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture adopted CGC as part of the dog-training
program at the National Detector Dog Center. The Boy Scouts of America added CGC
to its dog-care merit badge requirements and used AKC materials in creating the
section of the merit badge study guide that focuses on breed identification.
The state legislatures of New Hampshire and Washington passed resolutions
endorsing CGC."

Developing the Versatile Dog

Introduction to Rally, Obedience, Agility & Tracking
You want to try different training venues?
You want to begin your dog or puppy working on several?
You don’t want to enroll in several classes?
Not enough days in the week?
You don’t know what class you want to start first?
You want to begin training towards AKCs versatility companion dog title (VCD-1)?
HERE’S A CREATIVE SOLUTION!
1 CLASS
1 FEE
1 DAY/WEEK
INTRODUCTION TO:
AGILITY
TRADITIONAL OBEDIENCE, AND
RALLY OBEDIENCE (or Tracking depending on weather)
How will this work? I’ll teach the basics to beginning each venue. Each week
we’ll rotate the venue, beginning with "Traditional" Obedience the 1st
week. Agility the 2nd week, Rally Obedience the 3rd. Until
we’ve rotated through each. All will be based on AKC’s rules and
regulations. This is just an introduction, but enough to give you the flavor of
each. Pick which one(s) you want to pursue.
Agility

Agility is a fast paced dog sport. Teaching your dog to go over
or through
obstacles such bar jumps, tire jump, tunnels, teeter-totter, elevated
dog walk, and weave poles. Dogs must learn to take direction from handler, to
stay on course on safely navigate contact obstacles. This class is fun and can
either be for fun or readying for AKC Agility competition.
Tracking

Tracking is a great sport that is putting the trust in your
dog's natural ability to follow scent (tat we can't see or smell). We teach
ground scenting (instead of air scenting). Dog learn to follow scent in straight
lines, turns, finding and "indicating article" dropped, and changes in cover.
This can help with search-and-rescue and tracking competitions.
Pictured here is Kath Cook and
Wezel after earning an
AKC TD (Tracking Dog title).
Thanks Judges Billie French
and Terri McGauley ( and my tracklayer).

Items to bring with you to class:
1). Treat item for rewarding your dog. Please make sure they are small.
Hotdogs cut into dime size
pieces work well, as does thawed Biljac frozen dog
food. If you choose to use dog biscuits,
make sure they can be broken into small pieces.
A favorite toy can substitute.
2.) A 6’ leash. Nylon or leather works well (do not use a chain leash).
3.) A training collar. Chain with ring on either end. I will show you how to
put it on your dog properly.
